Lumbini Lions vs Sudurpaschim Royals opens Season 3 of the Nepal Premier League on Monday 26 October, and the fixture comes with a ready-made story. The two sides met in last season's final at the TU International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, where Lumbini chased down 86 in nine overs to take the title. Ten months on, they start the new season against each other at the same ground, under lights, at 5:00 PM NST.
The final rematch: champions against the league's most consistent side
The last meeting between these sides was the Season 2 final on 13 December 2025, and it was one-sided. Sudurpaschim were bowled out for 85 in 19.1 overs, and Lumbini knocked off the runs in nine overs, losing four wickets, to lift their first NPL title. Ruben Trumpelmann, the Namibian left-arm quick, was named Player of the Series across that season after taking 15 wickets in the Lions' title run.
Sudurpaschim have their own claim on this fixture. The Royals have reached the final in both NPL seasons so far, losing to Janakpur Bolts in 2024 and to Lumbini in 2025, and their all-time record of 14 wins from 18 matches is the best in the league. Lumbini's path ran the other way: one win in their first season, then a title in their second. Monday's opener pairs a champions' side that peaked at the right time with the side that has sat near the top from the start.

Lumbini Lions vs Sudurpaschim Royals head-to-head
Three meetings, three different games. In Season 1, on 7 December 2024, Sudurpaschim posted 187 for 4 and beat Lumbini by 45 runs, the Lions finishing on 142 for 9. The Season 2 league meeting on 27 November 2025 flipped the scoring pattern: Lumbini were bowled out for 143 in 19.4 overs and Sudurpaschim chased it with seven wickets and ten balls to spare.
Then came the final. Sudurpaschim's 85 all out on 13 December 2025 sits at the low end of what this fixture has produced, and Lumbini's reply, 86 for 4 in nine overs, was the fastest chase of the three. The pattern worth noting: the side batting second has won the last two meetings, and neither team has defended a total in this fixture since that first game in 2024.
Squads and form: what each side brings into the opener
Lumbini kept the core of their title side together. Captain Rohit Kumar Paudel leads a retained group of seven that includes Sher Malla, Sundeep Jora and the spinners Abhishesh Gautam and Tilak Bhandari, and the Lions re-signed both Trumpelmann and Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella. Their one big auction spend was wicketkeeper-batter Aasif Sheikh at NPR 20 lakh, and USA all-rounder Shadley van Schalkwyk completes a three-man overseas group. Head coach Tinu Yohannan has former India all-rounder Robin Singh alongside him as team mentor.
Sudurpaschim's squad is built the same way, around a retained core: captain Dipendra Singh Airee, Binod Bhandari, Aarif Sheikh, Ishan Pandey and fast bowler Abinash Bohara are all back. New Zealand bowling all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn returns as the league's all-time leading wicket-taker, Saif Ali Zaib is back after a season with Chitwan Rhinos, and Scotland's Brandon McMullen is the new overseas name. The Royals have also changed coaches: Misbah-ul-Haq, the former Pakistan captain, takes charge for Season 3. Full squads are on the Lumbini Lions and Sudurpaschim Royals team pages, and the predicted playing XIs set out how both sides are likely to line up.
Players to watch in the opener
Rohit Paudel is the central figure for Lumbini. His 555 runs are the most by any player in NPL history, and he bowls too: 18 wickets at an average of 11.44 across the first two seasons. When Paudel has a quiet game, the Lions tend to feel it at both ends of the innings. Trumpelmann is the other half of the story. His 15 wickets in Season 2 came at an economy of 6.35, and his new-ball overs against the Royals' top order will set the tone on Monday.
For Sudurpaschim, Scott Kuggeleijn's 27 wickets are the most by any bowler in the league's history, taken at 13.59 apiece. Behind him, Abinash Bohara has 24 wickets of his own. With the bat, Binod Bhandari's 499 runs make him the Royals' leading scorer across two seasons, while Airee's 389 runs have come at a strike rate of 147.3, the fastest rate in the side. Dickwella, who averaged 34.25 in six NPL matches for the Lions last season, is the overseas batter with a record in this league already.
TU Ground, Kirtipur: venue and conditions
Every one of Season 3's 32 matches is played at the TU International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, so there is no home-ground edge for either side in the opener beyond familiarity, and both know the ground well. The stadium sits at 1,330 metres on the Kathmandu Valley plateau, with natural turf pitches and grass banks for spectators.
The ground's NPL record book shows the range of what can happen here. The highest team total is Biratnagar Kings' 220 for 6 against Pokhara Avengers in November 2025; the lowest is Janakpur Bolts' 51 all out against Sudurpaschim in December 2024, a match the Royals themselves won. Mark Watt's 114 not out for Karnali Yaks is the highest individual score. DRS is in use for Season 3, and tickets for the opener are sold through eSewa.
What decides the opener
The new-ball overs come first. Trumpelmann and Kuggeleijn were the two outstanding seamers of the first two seasons, and both captains will want early wickets on a fresh surface in the season's first game. If either top order gets through the first four overs intact, the game opens up; if wickets fall in clusters, the final showed how hard rebuilding becomes on this ground.
The second battleground is the middle overs. Lumbini's spin pair of Bhandari and Gautam, with Paudel and Malla in support, faces a Sudurpaschim middle order that scores quickly but has been bowled out cheaply in this fixture before. Whoever controls overs seven to fifteen most likely controls the game.
