Seventeen-year-old Rahul Yadav announced himself to the Nepal Premier League with a wicket off his very first ball, turning a surprise selection into the story of Janakpur Bolts' clash with Karnali Yaks.
Rahul Yadav dream debut for Janakpur Bolts
Less than a month earlier, Rahul Yadav had been playing on the uneven, open cricket grounds of Rautahat. On October 27, 2026, the 17-year-old was bowling in front of thousands of fans at the TU International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, wearing the colours of Janakpur Bolts in the Nepal Premier League.
Yadav's selection alone caused a stir. When journalists in the media box received the line-ups for Janakpur's match against Karnali Yaks on their phones, the teenager's name in the playing XI stood out. The franchise had announced him as its iconic player for the third season on the evening of October 25, praising how he had stood out through fitness tests and cricket trials with the skill, hunger and determination it was looking for. Two days later, the decision looked inspired.
Harmeet Singh, the Janakpur captain, won the toss and elected to bowl first. Veteran England all-rounder Moeen Ali opened the bowling and dismissed the dangerous Mark Watt, before Nepal's experienced spinner Lalit Rajbanshi bowled the second over, in which Deepak Dumre struck two consecutive sixes. Dumre took a single off the final delivery to keep the strike — and then came the surprise. The 17-year-old was handed the ball for the third over.
First-ball wicket and powerplay control
Yadav looked composed as he began his short run-up, seemingly unfazed by the occasion or by the presence of fast-bowling great Shoaib Akhtar. A right-arm medium pacer, he put his body into the delivery to generate pace, bowled short, and tempted Dumre to cut. A bottom edge sent the ball onto the stumps, giving Yadav a wicket with his very first delivery in the NPL.
His debut did not end there. Dumre was replaced by Hussain Talat, the experienced Pakistan all-rounder, and Yadav kept the senior batter in check: four consecutive dot balls, before Talat finally got off the mark with a single off the last ball of the over. When Harmeet turned to the teenager again for the final over of the powerplay, Yadav delivered once more. After two dot balls, Talat, under pressure to score, was caught by Anil Kumar Sah, and Yadav conceded just one run in the over.
Across his two powerplay overs, Yadav conceded only two runs and took two wickets. His full spell cost just 15 runs from four overs and played a key role in restricting Karnali to 132 for 9 — a total that, as Karnali's 19-run win later showed, proved just enough on the night.
Rautahat talent hunt to TU Ground
Yadav's route to Kirtipur ran through Janakpur's talent hunt across Madhesh Province. In a video published by the franchise on October 16, he was among seven teenagers selected through the hunt and placed in the Bolts' development squad, a group of promising players set to train alongside the main squad throughout the tournament. The other six were Aadarsha Bhandari, Khil Raj Sharraf, Navin Kumar Yadav, Rohan Kumar Sah, Md Miraj and Sushant Singh.
Asked in that video what he would do if selected, Yadav answered simply: “I will give my 100 percent for the team.” It was a line he lived up to within days of the announcement. His Facebook profile picture before the debut showed him holding a man-of-the-match award from the Chandrapur Cricket League 2082.
The debut also showed another side of the teenager. Coming in at No. 10 with Karnali bowler Unish Bikram Singh Thakuri on a hat-trick, after dismissing Jimmy Neesham and Aaditya Mahata with the first two balls of the 16th over, Yadav survived the next three deliveries and took a single off the final ball to give Abhishekh Tiwari the strike. Tiwari went on to hit two sixes. Yadav finished as Janakpur's only unbeaten batter, on one off 10 balls.
Harmeet Singh verdict on the next big thing
Janakpur could not chase the target. Bowled out for 113 in 19.3 overs, they lost by 19 runs, and the defeat, not the debut, went into the record books. But the franchise's captain was in no doubt about what he had seen. “I think he is very deceptive, and someone who has never played him would always find it difficult in the first few balls,” Harmeet said at the post-match press conference.
Harmeet went further. He said Yadav's skill set and pace could make him the next big thing in Nepali cricket if he continued to work hard and received more opportunities, adding that Nepal's national team needed bowlers with his pace. It is the kind of praise that raises expectations fast, and the Kathmandu Post's own headline asked the same question the morning after: could Rahul Yadav be Nepali cricket's next big thing?
One debut, however brilliant, does not answer that question. What it does earn Yadav is a second look from every batting side Janakpur face. The next matches will show whether the first chapter was a glimpse or a beginning.
