Andre Russell was supposed to say goodbye to NPL Season 3 after Biratnagar Kings beat Janakpur Bolts on Tuesday. Instead, the West Indies all-rounder has extended his stay by one match, and he says he will be back next season.
A farewell that became one more match
It should have been Andre Russell's last match of the season when Biratnagar Kings faced Janakpur Bolts on Tuesday. The pre-match expectation, reported widely before the game, was that Russell and Janakpur's Moeen Ali would leave for the Abu Dhabi T10 after that match, and this site reported the same planned farewell on Tuesday morning. After Biratnagar's two-run win, Russell changed the plan in the simplest way possible, telling journalists: “I will play one more match.”
He gave the reason in equally plain terms, saying: “I love Nepal so much, I am staying. I am not going home.” That is a remarkable sentence from a player whose overseas commitments were already fixed, and it reframes the whole week for Biratnagar. Instead of replacing their headline overseas player at short notice, the Kings keep him for one more game, and instead of a farewell, Tuesday's match-winning performance becomes the middle of the story rather than its end.
The extension matters because of what Tuesday was. Russell was named player of the match after deciding the game with both bat and ball, and he made the announcement with that performance still fresh. Players often promise to return in the glow of a win; far fewer delay a scheduled departure on the spot. Russell has done the second, which is why the news travelled so quickly on Wednesday morning despite being, on paper, only a one-match change.
The final over that changed the goodbye
Biratnagar posted 174 for 3 after being sent in to bat, and Janakpur finished on 172 for 7, chasing 175. Russell's unbeaten 52 off 29 balls, with two fours and five sixes, gave the Kings their late surge, and his four wickets for 45 runs then kept Janakpur short. The decisive passage was the final over, with Janakpur needing 13 runs. Russell conceded 10, dismissed captain Harmeet Singh for a duck, and then had the set batter Saif Hassan, who had made 71, caught off the very last ball.
Afterwards Russell explained the thinking behind that last over in terms of experience rather than luck: having been in such situations many times over the years, he said, he tries to read what the batter expects and bowl what the batter would not expect. His short ball across the batter in that over was, by his own account, a bluff, and it worked on the night. He was candid that on another day the same ball could have gone into the stands, which is a fair summary of death bowling in general and of Russell's high-risk, high-reward style in particular.
The full match report is covered in our account of the two-run win, and the planned departure it has now superseded was set out in our farewell piece on Russell and Moeen Ali. What the extension does not change is Moeen Ali's position: the Kathmandu Post report covers Russell only, and nothing in it says Moeen has also stayed. Biratnagar's gain, on the evidence published so far, is Russell alone, for one match.
10,000 T20 runs and praise for Nepali talent
The extension announcement came wrapped in a broader reflection from Russell on his career. During this NPL stint he completed 10,000 runs in T20 cricket, a milestone he said he had set himself five years ago, with the aim of becoming the first fast-bowling all-rounder to reach 10,000 runs and 500 wickets in the format. He has now set a new target of 12,000 T20 runs, and he spoke about the sacrifices behind such milestones: playing through injuries and niggles, undergoing surgery, and coming back stronger.
Russell, a two-time T20 World Cup winner with West Indies and a two-time Indian Premier League winner, was also full of praise for Nepali cricket. He recalled Nepal's T20I series win over his home side and the challenge the young cricketing nation posed in recent T20 World Cups, saying the talent is present in Nepal and that the players need the right guidance and must stay hungry and humble. Off the field, he spoke warmly about the scenery, the mountain view from his room, and Nepal's weather, which helps explain why a player with a flight to catch would choose to stay a few days longer.
There is a second promise tucked inside the extension, and it may matter more than the extra match itself. Russell said he intends to return to the tournament next year, describing it as a good challenge and explaining that he does not simply arrive to hit sixes: he watches what bowlers are doing, faces a few deliveries, and reads the game before attacking. For a league still building its reputation with overseas stars, a voluntary return promise from a player of Russell's standing is a stronger endorsement than any signing announcement, because it is given after experiencing the tournament rather than before it.
What one extra match means for Biratnagar
The immediate consequence is a marquee contest. Biratnagar's next match is against Kathmandu Gorkhas on Thursday, and it now becomes Andre Russell against David Warner, the two biggest overseas names of NPL Season 3 on the same field. That fixture was already part of Thursday's double-header, as set out in our preview of Matches 14 and 15, but Russell's presence changes its character entirely: instead of Biratnagar facing Warner without their own superstar, they meet him with Russell in the side, fresh from a player-of-the-match performance.
For Biratnagar's season, the timing is useful rather than decisive. The Kings reached four points from four matches with Tuesday's win, and the points table remains tight enough that one result can move a side several places. A win over Kathmandu would give Biratnagar real momentum and a second straight victory built around Russell; a defeat would still leave them in touch, but without the player who won them the last game. The extra match is therefore best understood as a bonus, not a rescue: Biratnagar still need their Nepali core, led by captain Sandeep Lamichhane, to carry the season once Russell finally leaves, and the schedule after Thursday will test exactly that.
The wider meaning is about the league itself. Overseas players in short tournaments are usually managed to the day, with flights, replacement signings and franchise commitments all interlocking. When a player of Russell's profile voluntarily breaks that timetable because he enjoys the country and the competition, it signals something that press releases cannot manufacture: that the NPL, in its third season, is becoming a tournament players want to stay in, not just a stop on the way somewhere else. If Russell does return next season, as he says he intends to, this one-match extension will be remembered as the moment that promise was made, in Kirtipur, after a two-run win he had just decided himself.
