Chitwan Rhinos have appointed former Pakistan fast bowler Sohail Tanvir as head coach for NPL Season 3 and declared their target: a first Nepal Premier League title. The announcement was confirmed at a press event in Bharatpur, where chairman Ayush Neupane said the franchise had worked much harder than last time.
From Strike Bowler to Head Coach
Chitwan Rhinos have turned to a familiar face for their title push, appointing Sohail Tanvir as head coach for the third edition of the Nepal Premier League. The former Pakistan left-arm fast bowler represented the Rhinos as a player in the first two seasons, and the franchise believes his inside knowledge of the dressing room and the opposition gives him a head start in the dugout.
Tanvir took 14 wickets in the inaugural edition, finishing among the leading wicket-takers, and added eight more in the second season, according to figures quoted by Online Khabar. "We asked Tanvir to take on the coaching role this season, and he accepted without hesitation," chief executive officer Pratap Devkota said. "He understands our team's strengths and weaknesses as well as those of our opponents. We will follow the plans he develops, with the support of the captain and other players."
Strengthening the bowling attack and fielding will be among Tanvir's key priorities. Tanvir is not the only international figure moving into a dugout this season — Pokhara Avengers have appointed former Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis — but he is the only one doing so at a franchise he already represented as a player. That continuity is the bet Chitwan are making.
Chitwan Rhinos' Overseas Core
England veteran Ravi Bopara remains central to Chitwan's plans after being retained. The 42-year-old batting all-rounder scored 286 runs in the inaugural season and 237 in the second, and the franchise's figures credit him with 13 Tests, 120 one-day internationals and 38 T20 internationals for England, plus 9,948 runs and 292 wickets across 494 T20 matches.
He will be supported by Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza, whose experience spans the Indian Premier League, the Pakistan Super League and the Caribbean Premier League. Pakistan leg-spinner Usama Mir — whose signing was announced earlier this month — and Canada left-arm quick Kaleem Sana complete the confirmed overseas group, with the franchise planning two more international additions to finish a six-player contingent.
Sana arrives with recent form against Nepal itself, having dismissed Aasif Sheikh and Arjun Kumal in Canada's World Cup League 2 fixture against the hosts. Mir, a right-arm leg-spinner with ODI and T20I caps for Pakistan, adds the specialist spin the Rhinos have openly lacked in past seasons.
Retained Core and New Faces
Captain Kushal Malla leads a retained group of seven that also includes Dev Khanal, Kamal Singh Airee, Arjun Saud, Rijan Dhakal, Ranjit Kumar and Dipak Bohara. At the top of the order, the Rhinos have options. Arjun Saud could partner Khanal, although Raza is another potential opener — flexibility that gives Tanvir room to match combinations to conditions at Kirtipur. The franchise is also keeping a close eye on Malla's own form after an inconsistent run, with the captain expected to play a central role if the title bid is to be serious.
The auction brought in Bibek Kumar Yadav, Mausam Dhakal, Ashok Dhami, Bipin Rawal, Gautam KC and Salahuddin Khan — several of them players the franchise had released earlier and then bought back. Most of the Nepali contingent has just completed a month-long closed training camp at Gauritar in Hetauda, with the coaching staff also spending time on opposition analysis and identifying the squad's own strengths and weaknesses.
Chairman Ayush Neupane made the ambition plain: "We have worked much harder than last time, and our target is to win the title. The competition will also be tougher because other teams have strengthened their squads." Devkota added that the side is targeting a top-two league finish to reach the final directly and avoid the eliminator altogether.
Chitwan Rhinos' Season 3 Fixtures
The Rhinos open their campaign against Biratnagar Kings on October 27 at 12:30 pm. The full league schedule then takes them to Lumbini Lions on October 31, Sudurpaschim Royals on November 2, Pokhara Avengers on November 6, Kathmandu Gorkhas on November 9, Janakpur Bolts on November 13 and Karnali Yaks on November 15, all at the TU International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur.
It is a demanding run. The Rhinos must finish in the top four of the eight-team table to reach the playoffs, and the management has spoken of aiming higher still — a top-two finish and a direct route to the November 21 final.
Free Buses for Rhinos Supporters
The franchise will again run free bus services for supporters travelling from Chitwan to Kirtipur, with up to five buses departing from Chitwan Medical College on match days depending on demand. Supporters need match tickets and must wear the team jersey to board, with return transport arranged after the final ball.
The Rhinos have built their identity around the endangered one-horned rhinoceros of Chitwan, and the travelling support has become part of the franchise's brand. Owned by Chitwan Medical College, the Rhinos are one of two Bagmati Province sides in the league alongside Kathmandu Gorkhas.
From Playoff Heartbreak to Title Ambition
The title talk follows two contrasting campaigns. In the inaugural edition the Rhinos reached the playoffs — beating eventual champions Janakpur Bolts and title contenders Sudurpaschim Royals along the way — before falling to Karnali Yaks in the first eliminator. Last season brought only two wins from seven league matches and four points, missing the playoffs entirely. The Rhinos opened with a four-wicket win over Karnali Yaks and later beat Biratnagar Kings by 48 runs, but lost their other five matches — the inconsistency Tanvir has been hired to fix.
That is the gap Tanvir has been hired to close. With an experienced overseas core, a settled Nepali group, a structured pre-season behind them and a coach who knows the league from the inside, Chitwan believe this is the year near-misses become a championship.
