Nepal U19 Asia Cup squad announcement
The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has announced a 15-member squad for the ACC Men's U19 Asia Cup, with Bipin Prasad Sharma named captain. The announcement, reported on November 2, comes just three days before the tournament opens in Oman on November 5, leaving the young side a short runway between selection and its first match.
Alongside Sharma, the squad names Niraj Kumar Yadav, Prashiddha Jaishi, Sohail Kunwar, Darsh Sunar, Rohit Chand, Nischal Chhetri, Ashish Luhar, Roshan Shahi, Suryanshu Koirala, Abhay Yadav, Sushil Rawal, Nitesh Kumar Patel, Shubham Khanal and Sachin Bhatta.
Sharma is a familiar name to followers of domestic cricket in Nepal. The slow left-arm orthodox bowler, who turned 18 in October, plays for Karnali Yaks in the Nepal Premier League, where he was the franchise's leading wicket-taker in the inaugural season. His appointment gives the U19 side a captain who already knows senior dressing rooms and televised franchise cricket.
Group A fixtures against India, UAE and Pakistan
Nepal have been drawn in Group A alongside India, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Malaysia make up Group B. The eight-team tournament is played in the 50-over format at the Oman Cricket Academy Grounds at Al Amerat, with the top two teams from each group reaching the semi-finals.
Nepal open against India on November 6 at Turf 1, then face the UAE on November 8 at Turf 2 and finish the group stage against Pakistan on November 10 at Turf 1. The semi-finals are scheduled for November 12 and the final for November 14. All group matches start at 9:00 AM Gulf Standard Time.
The timing means Nepal's age-group campaign runs right through the middle of the domestic season. Back home, the Nepal Premier League season is under way at Kirtipur, and the points table is already taking shape while the U19 side is abroad. Fans following both campaigns can keep up with the domestic season through the schedule page and the live scores page, and through streaming coverage of NPL matches.
Selection pathway from Pokhara closed camp
The final 15 were chosen from a 28-member preliminary squad that CAN announced on October 24. Those players went into a closed training camp in Pokhara that began on October 26, and the final squad is the product of that camp rather than a paper selection made at a desk in Kathmandu. Players who performed in camp earned places, and several preliminary names did not survive the cut.
The way CAN describes its own selection practice also frames the announcement. CAN secretary Paras Khadka has drawn a clear line between appointing a captain, which he says is a board decision, and picking a squad, which rests with the selectors, coach and captain. Speaking to Kantipur TV, he said: "The selection committee coordinates with the captain and coach to select the Nepal cricket team. The board does not decide who should or should not be in the playing team."
That distinction frames this squad: Sharma's captaincy is a board call, while the 14 names around him are a selection call made after the Pokhara camp.
What the Asia Cup means for Nepal cricket
This is a hard group, and there is no point pretending otherwise. India and Pakistan are the two strongest age-group programmes in Asia, and Nepal will most likely need to beat the UAE and then upset at least one of the two giants to reach the semi-finals. The UAE match on November 8 is therefore the swing game of the group: win it, and Nepal stay alive going into the Pakistan match; lose it, and the last group game becomes a matter of pride rather than qualification.
The 50-over format changes the test, too. Much of the attention in Nepali cricket right now is on the T20 game through the NPL, but the Asia Cup rewards patience, innings-building and bowling discipline across 50 overs. For players like Sharma, who bowls long, containing spells, that is a fairer examination than a four-over T20 burst. It is also the format closest to the senior 50-over game, where Nepal's ODI status remains the long-term prize.
CAN secretary Paras Khadka has argued that Nepal's senior stagnation came from relying on too narrow a pool, saying in an August interview: "While this group took us to the Asia Cup and the World Cup, sticking strictly to the same pool without introducing fresh competition was holding us back." He added, in the same interview, that giving young players international exposure now is vital if Nepal wants to move beyond merely surviving in ODI cricket. This squad is that argument in action: a group of teenagers sent into a continental tournament, against India and Pakistan, while the domestic season carries on without them.
Nepal's youth captain will be in Oman while his franchise season is under way at Kirtipur, a reminder that the pathway and the franchise league now compete for the same young players at the same time. A semi-final place would show the pathway beneath the senior team can produce players ready for the biggest stage in Asian youth cricket.
