The ICC has granted List A T20 status to every match of Nepal Premier League Season 3, the Cricket Association of Nepal announced on 21 October. Performances across the 26 October to 21 November tournament at Kirtipur will count towards official T20 statistics, a first for the league after two unrecognised editions.

List A T20 Status for Every Season 3 Match

The Cricket Association of Nepal confirmed on Wednesday that the International Cricket Council has recognised every match of the third Nepal Premier League season as a List A T20 fixture. The confirmation completes a two-step process that began last week: the ICC sanctioned the league on Friday, and the formal List A classification arrived on Wednesday, five days before the opening match.

In its statement, CAN called the recognition "a significant milestone for cricket in Nepal" and said the classification would help raise the standard of domestic cricket. CAN secretary Paras Khadka said the decision would contribute to the development and professionalisation of cricket in the country while strengthening Nepal's international standing. The recognition covers all 32 matches of the tournament, from the 26 October opener to the 21 November final.

Official T20 Statistics for Every Performance

The practical change is simple and permanent. Every innings, bowling spell and record set during Season 3 now enters the official T20 record. A young domestic batter who scores a fifty at Kirtipur adds it to his official career T20 statistics, and a bowler's five-wicket haul in the league counts the same way it would in any other recognised T20 competition in the world.

That was not the case before. The ICC had not recognised the league's first two editions, so the runs and wickets from Seasons 1 and 2 sit outside official T20 statistics. From this season, the league's own season statistics will mirror the official record, and performances in the NPL can be compared directly with a player's numbers in international and franchise T20 cricket.

A Landmark Season at Kirtipur

Season 3 runs from 26 October to 21 November at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, the tournament's only venue. Eight teams play 32 matches, and the full fixture list opens with defending champions Lumbini Lions against Sudurpaschim Royals on Monday 26 October at 5:00 PM. The Decision Review System also makes its league debut this season, so the opening match will be a landmark in more than one way: the first NPL fixture played with DRS, and the first played with List A T20 status.

Fans following from home can track every game through the live scores hub and the points table, watch through the official live streaming partners, or buy match tickets through eSewa for the Kirtipur stands.

From Awaited Sanction to Full Recognition

CAN spent much of the build-up waiting on the ICC. The governing body's sanction was confirmed on 16 October, a story covered in our report on the league's ICC official T20 status, and it removed the old restriction that limited how many players from Test-playing nations each franchise could sign. The first two editions had gone ahead without that recognition.

Wednesday's List A confirmation is the final piece. The league now starts its third season with its matches sanctioned, its performances carrying official statistical standing, and its franchises free to field the overseas squads they have assembled, which include some of the biggest names the tournament has attracted.

What the Status Means for Nepali Cricket

CAN has been clear about what it wants from the classification: higher domestic standards, greater professionalism among local players and a stronger global standing for Nepali cricket. The mechanism is straightforward. Official status turns the NPL into a place where a domestic player builds a verifiable T20 record at home, in front of home crowds, instead of only in internationals or overseas leagues.

Attention now turns to the cricket itself. On Monday evening, under lights at Kirtipur, Lumbini Lions and Sudurpaschim Royals will play the first List A T20 match in the league's history, and every run in it will count.

FAQs

What does List A T20 status mean for NPL Season 3 matches?

It means every match is an officially recognised T20 fixture. Players' performances in the tournament — runs, wickets and records — count towards their official T20 career statistics, the same as in other recognised T20 competitions.

When did the ICC confirm List A T20 status for the NPL?

The Cricket Association of Nepal announced the formal confirmation on Wednesday 21 October 2026. The ICC had sanctioned the league itself on 16 October, and the List A T20 classification followed five days later.

Were the first two NPL seasons officially recognised?

No. The ICC had not recognised the first two editions of the Nepal Premier League, so performances in Seasons 1 and 2 do not carry official T20 statistical standing. Season 3 is the first edition with both ICC sanction and List A T20 status.

When and where is NPL Season 3 being played?

The tournament runs from 26 October to 21 November 2026 at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. Eight teams play 32 matches, starting with Lumbini Lions against Sudurpaschim Royals at 5:00 PM on 26 October.
