Kathmandu Gorkhas head coach Sharad Vesawkar has hinted that David Warner could join the team for their second match of Nepal Premier League Season 3, after the Australian opener missed the franchise's first game against Janakpur Bolts.
Vesawkar's Hint After the Janakpur Defeat
Speaking at the post-match press conference after Kathmandu Gorkhas lost to Janakpur Bolts by eight wickets in Match 5, head coach Sharad Vesawkar said David Warner could arrive in time for the next game or join the squad soon. The hint, reported by MakaluKhabar, is the first public indication from the Kathmandu camp that the Australian's arrival is close, after he was confirmed as not yet in Nepal at the toss for the Janakpur game.
Vesawkar was frank about why Kathmandu lost their opener. He said the side failed to build crucial partnerships and fell 10 to 15 runs short of a competitive total, and that losing wickets at regular intervals proved costly. Kathmandu were bowled out for 115 in 19.3 overs after winning the toss and batting first at the TU Ground in Kirtipur, with Karan KC's side losing both openers inside the powerplay and never recovering.
The coach said the playing conditions were challenging and said Kathmandu had tailored their bowling to a Janakpur line-up featuring several left-handers. He admitted, though, that his options in selecting players were limited, and identified the unbeaten stand between experienced all-rounders Moeen Ali and Saif Hassan as the turning point, saying it shifted the momentum in Janakpur's favour. Despite the modest target, he praised his bowlers for their determination to fight back.
Why Warner Changes Kathmandu's Equation
Kathmandu's batting in Match 5 showed exactly what Warner is being brought in to fix. Openers Sam Heazlett and Smit Patel fell for one and 13, Bhim Sharki top-scored with 33 off 29 balls, and only four batters reached double figures as the innings unravelled from 100 for nine at the end of the 18th over to 115 all out. A side that cannot build a partnership at the top keeps handing opponents modest totals, and Janakpur needed only 17.2 overs to knock off 116.
Warner is not a marginal upgrade. He is a two-time ODI World Cup winner, T20 World Cup winner and Player of the Tournament, World Test Championship winner, and the only three-time IPL Orange Cap winner, with more than 6,000 IPL runs. In the video message released when his signing was announced on September 15, he said: "I am really excited to be coming to Nepal and joining the Kathmandu Gorkhas squad. I have heard so much about the passion and the fans. I can't wait to experience it all." He signed off with the franchise's rallying cry: "Three cities, one soul, one team and one dream. Ayo Gorkhali!"
Kathmandu executive director Anubhab Swar Sirohiya described the signing as the result of months of discussions, saying: "Bringing David Warner to the Kathmandu Gorkhas was not something that happened overnight. It took months of conversations, persistence and belief from everyone involved." That effort only pays off if Warner actually takes the field, which is why Vesawkar's hint matters more than any signing-day excitement.
The Karnali Test on November 2
Kathmandu's second match is Match 10 against Karnali Yaks on Monday, November 2, at 12:30 PM NST at the TU Ground. It is a far harder assignment than the opener looked. Karnali have won both their matches, beating Janakpur by 19 runs and then chasing 187 against Biratnagar Kings with one ball to spare on October 29, and they sit alone at the top of the points table with four points.
For Kathmandu, the fixes Vesawkar named are specific, not general. The top order must survive the powerplay: against Janakpur they lost both openers inside the powerplay and the middle order never rebuilt. The bowling, which Vesawkar praised for its fight despite defending only 115, will need the same discipline against a Karnali side whose captain Sompal Kami has already produced a four-wicket haul and an unbeaten 62 in the same match. If Warner walks out at the top of the order, Kathmandu's batting instantly has the anchor it lacked in Match 5.
The schedule gives Kathmandu time to regroup. There are no NPL matches on Friday, October 30, so the Gorkhas have a rest day before the weekend's double-header, and three days before their own next game. Whether Warner arrives in that window is now the franchise's most-watched storyline.
A Coach Under Pressure, Backing His Young Bowlers
Vesawkar also acknowledged the challenges of serving as head coach, saying he was someone who thrived under pressure. That is a notable statement after a first game in which his side were outplayed in all three departments, framing the Warner wait as a test of the whole set-up: limited options, overseas arrivals still to come, and a batting unit that must find partnerships.
He was generous about the opposition, too. Praising Janakpur's young bowler Rahul Yadav, who took four wickets for 31 runs and was named Player of the Match, Vesawkar said the youngster had shown excellent bowling skills and had the potential to make a significant contribution to Nepal cricket in the future. It was a reminder that Kathmandu lost to a side whose own gamble on youth paid off immediately.
The coach expressed confidence that the arrival of overseas players could strengthen the squad in upcoming matches. Beyond Warner, Kathmandu's overseas group includes former India wicketkeeper KS Bharat, Sri Lanka's Sahan Arachchige and Australia's William Bosisto, who was also unavailable for the opener. If even two of them are available against Karnali, Kathmandu will field a different side from the one that lost to Janakpur.
