Saturday double-header at Kirtipur
Play resumes on Saturday, 31 October, at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, after Friday's scheduled rest day. The schedule lists two matches: Lumbini Lions against Chitwan Rhinos at 12:30 PM in Match 7, followed by Sudurpaschim Royals against Biratnagar Kings in the evening in Match 8.
Coverage follows the usual pattern: NetTV streams every NPL match, Himalaya TV broadcasts in Nepal, and scores are on the live-scores page during play. Only six of 28 league matches have been played.
That logjam is what makes Saturday matter. The points table after Match 6 has Karnali alone on four points, then Lumbini, Chitwan, Janakpur and Sudurpaschim on two points, separated only by net run rate. Biratnagar sit sixth with two defeats, while Kathmandu and Pokhara have each lost their only match. Every Saturday winner joins Karnali on four points.
Defending champions against in-form Chitwan
Lumbini Lions return after five days away from the middle. The defending champions opened Season 3 by bowling Sudurpaschim Royals out for 87 in 17.2 overs and chasing 88 to win by seven wickets. Captain Rohit Paudel won the toss and elected to field; Kishor Mahato took four for 28, Sher Malla claimed three, and D'Arcy Short smashed 40 off 18 balls alongside Aasif Sheikh's 32.
Chitwan Rhinos, by contrast, have already shown they can win a close one. In Match 2 they defended 157 for three against Biratnagar Kings, bowling them out for 149 in 19.3 overs to win by eight runs, with Dawid Malan scoring the season's first half-century with 70 and Kamal Singh Airee taking four for 26.
Chitwan's ambition is stated plainly by the franchise. "We have worked much harder than last time, and our target is to win the title," chairman Ayush Neupane told OnlineKhabar before the season, adding: "The competition will also be tougher because other teams have strengthened their squads." Chief executive Pratap Devkota said the franchise asked head coach Sohail Tanvir to take the role and "he accepted without hesitation", and that the team was targeting a direct place in the final by finishing among the top two. Captain Kushal Malla leads a side that spent a month in a closed training camp at Hetauda before the tournament.
The analysis here is simple: a contest between the side with the tournament's most emphatic win and the side with its most composed one. Lumbini's +4.599 net run rate, built on that seven-wicket rout, is a cushion no other team owns. Chitwan, though, carry the momentum of a win earned under pressure, with fresh signings who went straight from the airport to the ground and delivered.
Must-win evening for Biratnagar Kings
The evening match is, on paper, the more desperate fixture. Sudurpaschim Royals opened with a seven-wicket defeat to Lumbini, then opened their account by beating Pokhara Avengers by six wickets in Match 4, chasing 146 to reach 148 for four in 16.5 overs. Captain Dipendra Singh Airee finished unbeaten on 51 off 36 balls, after a 74-run fourth-wicket stand with Ishan Pandey, who scored 37.
Biratnagar Kings arrive with nothing to show for two matches, but neither defeat was a rout. They lost by eight runs to Chitwan in Match 2, then by four wickets to Karnali in Match 6 after posting 186 for seven, with Lokesh Bam smashing 87 off 52 balls, including nine sixes, before falling 13 runs short of the NPL's first Nepali century. Angelo Mathews added 31 and Andre Russell 27, yet Karnali chased the target with one ball to spare.
Captain Sandeep Lamichhane has already faced the questions Saturday will sharpen. After the Chitwan defeat, asked whether the loss felt heavier given Chitwan's airport-to-ground signings, he demurred, saying: "It is not easy to have players arrive early." On the defeat itself he was blunt: "T20 brings a great experience to players that you can take the game anywhere at any time. It is just a bad day with shot selections [for us]." Biratnagar's batting has the firepower, as Bam's 87 proved, but their shot selection and closing overs have now cost them twice.
The stakes are therefore asymmetric. A Sudurpaschim win lifts the Royals to four points and into the leading pack. A Biratnagar win opens their account and pulls them level with the mid-table pack. A third straight defeat, though, would leave them alone at the bottom with three losses, with 20 league matches still to play but the margin for error already shrinking.
What Saturday changes in the title race
Saturday also tests a theme that has run through the first week: late arrivals. The Kathmandu Post's reporting on the opening days showed franchises adapting at speed — Chitwan winning with airport-to-ground signings after replacing three Pakistan players who could not play, and star names such as David Warner and David Miller yet to arrive when the tournament began. Warner had still not reached Nepal for Kathmandu's first match on Thursday, and Miller had not appeared for Karnali by Match 6. Saturday's four teams are no exception.
The rest day matters here too. Four days, six matches, one square: Friday gave groundstaff their first full day with the pitch and squads a day to recover before the weekend block. The side that uses that pause best carries a real edge into Saturday.
None of this makes Saturday decisive: twenty league matches will remain after Match 8, and a single heavy defeat can erase a net-run-rate advantage built over two games. But the shape of the race will be clearer by Saturday night.
