The league leaders arrive in Kirtipur with two wins from two matches and a captain in the form of his life. Their opponents arrive with one heavy defeat, a batting order that never got going, and the biggest unanswered question of the season still hanging over them.
League Leaders Against a Winless Gorkhas Side
Two matches into their season, the Karnali Yaks are the only side in the third edition of the Nepal Premier League with two wins. The Yaks sit alone at the top of the points table with four points and a net run rate of +0.533, and on Monday they face a Kathmandu Gorkhas side that has played once and lost once. Match 10 begins at 12:30 PM NST at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, the first game of Monday's double-header, with Sudurpaschim Royals against Chitwan Rhinos to follow in the evening.
The contrast could hardly be sharper. Karnali have won a low-scoring scrap and a last-over shootout; Kathmandu were bowled out for 115 and beaten with 16 balls to spare. A third straight win would put Karnali four points clear of the chasing pack, while a second defeat would leave Kathmandu chasing the table from the first week.
Sompal Kami and Karnali's Winning Method
Karnali's season so far starts with their captain. Sompal Kami was the player of the match in the win that put his side top of the table, taking four wickets against Biratnagar Kings and then returning at number seven to smash an unbeaten 62 from 32 balls, with three sixes and four fours, to chase down 187 with a ball to spare. It came after Biratnagar had posted the season's highest total, 186 for 7, built on Lokesh Bam's 87 from 52 balls.
The chase told the story of this Karnali side. They were 123 for 6 at the end of the 14th over, with Pawan Sarraf just dismissed, and the game looked gone. Kami then found Gulshan Jha, who made a crucial 28 from 21 balls, and the pair took Karnali to 165 for 6 at the end of the 18th over, needing 22 from 12 balls, before finishing the job in the final over. Ariful Islam (32 from 12) and Deepak Dumre (20 from 11) had kept the innings alive earlier.
At the post-match press conference, Kami refused to make the night about himself. “Karnali Yaks played really well, and we are very happy. More than my innings, these two points were very important for us. I hope we can maintain this winning momentum,” he said. His faith in Jha never wavered: “Not just me, but all the players and staff in my team believed we would win this match. Gulshan and I have been roommates for five years. We understand each other well, and I know what kind of player he is. Even when we needed 17–18 runs in the final six overs, I was confident we could win,” he said.
The first win had been different. Against Janakpur Bolts in Match 3, Karnali defended just 132 for 9, bowling Janakpur out for 113, with Younish Bikram Thakuri taking three wickets and Ariful Islam scoring 43. Karnali have also added Jishan Alam since Thursday, after his Biratnagar Kings move fell through.
Kathmandu's Batting Problem and the Warner Question
Kathmandu's problem in their opener was a batting performance that never built anything. After winning the toss and choosing to bat against Janakpur Bolts, the Gorkhas were bowled out for 115 in 19.3 overs, with only Bhim Sharki (33 from 29 balls) offering sustained resistance. Captain Karan KC made 8 from 18 balls, openers Sam Heazlett and Smit Patel managed 1 and 13, and 17-year-old Rahul Yadav took four wickets for 31 runs to be named player of the match. Janakpur then chased 116 for 2 in 17.2 overs, with Moeen Ali (58 not out from 51) and Saif Hassan (40 not out from 39) in an unbroken 79-run stand.
Coach Sharad Vesawkar was blunt about where the game was lost. He said Kathmandu failed to build crucial partnerships and fell 10 to 15 runs short of a competitive total, and that regular wicket losses proved costly even though the bowlers fought hard to defend a small score. He also said the arrival of overseas players could strengthen the squad. David Warner, the former Australia captain and the season's biggest signing, had not joined the squad for the opener, and Vesawkar hinted after the Janakpur defeat that Warner could arrive in time for the second match.
That hint is still the latest word on Warner: nothing since has confirmed his arrival, and Kathmandu must prepare as if the team that lost to Janakpur is the team that plays Karnali. Without Warner, the top order must set a platform for Karan KC and the middle order, and on Thursday's evidence that platform never appeared. With Warner, the entire shape of the innings changes, and a batting line-up that looked fragile suddenly has a player who has spent a career removing exactly that kind of pressure.
Key Battles That Will Decide Match 10
The first battle is at the top of Kathmandu's innings: if Heazlett and Patel survive the new ball and give Sharki a platform, Kathmandu can post a competitive total, but if Karnali's bowlers repeat Rahul Yadav's Thursday demolition, the game will follow a familiar script. The second battle is Kami against Kathmandu's middle order. The Karnali captain has won a game with the ball and a game with the bat in the same week, and his words suggest a player enjoying his cricket, not feeling its weight. “I play cricket because I love it. If I play out of fear, I cannot enjoy it. So, I enjoy every ball and every moment. I want to celebrate every boundary,” he said after the Biratnagar win. Kathmandu's response must come from Karan KC and Sharki. The live scores hub will carry the toss and team news as they are confirmed on Monday, and the playing XIs will only be settled at the toss itself.
What Match 10 Will Reveal About Both Sides
Strip away the Warner subplot and this is a revealing fixture on its own terms. Karnali's two wins came against sides heading in different directions: Janakpur, who bounced back to beat Kathmandu that same day, and Biratnagar, who have lost twice despite posting the season's highest total. Beating Kathmandu would make it three wins from three, and the conversation around Karnali would change from a good start to a genuine title challenge. Their net run rate of +0.533 is modest: their position is built on wins, not margins.
For Kathmandu, the honest reading is that Monday measures something more basic than title credentials: whether this batting line-up can function as a unit. One collapse can be written off as a bad day, especially against a 17-year-old having the game of his life, but two in a row would look like a pattern, and patterns are hard to break in a seven-game season. The Gorkhas finished fourth last season, losing in the eliminator to eventual champions Lumbini, so this is not a franchise without recent pedigree.
Karnali deserve to start as favourites: unbeaten, with the tournament's form player as captain, and already winners of both kinds of game Monday is likely to become. But favourites have lost twice already this season to sides that played the big moments better. If Warner walks out at the toss, the balance shifts further than any form guide can measure. If he does not, the team that handles the first six overs better will probably handle the rest of the afternoon too.
