Sudurpaschim Royals all-rounder Saif Zaib has signed a multi-year deal with Hampshire, the English county announced on October 30, 2026, while the 28-year-old is in the middle of his Nepal Premier League campaign in Kirtipur.
The Hampshire announcement
Sudurpaschim Royals all-rounder Saif Zaib has joined Hampshire on a multi-year deal, the county announced on Friday, October 30, 2026. Hampshire described him as a reigning Vitality Blast champion, arriving after 13 Northamptonshire seasons with nearly 7,000 runs and 98 wickets.
Zaib said he was excited to start a new chapter with Hampshire, calling them a highly competitive and ambitious club, and said he looked forward to joining up with the squad soon. He added: "I've loved my time at Northamptonshire and can't thank them enough for giving me the opportunity to play professional cricket, something I've been lucky enough to do for 12 years, but I feel now is the time for a change." He said he wanted to help get Hampshire back to Division One and contribute to winning matches and tournaments, adding: "They are a great force, especially in white ball cricket, and I hope I can be part of the team's success next season and beyond."
Hampshire director of cricket Giles White welcomed the signing, saying: "We're delighted to welcome Saif to the club. He's been an excellent performer for several years and has been especially prolific with the bat in Championship cricket over the last two seasons." White added: "His versatility makes him an exciting addition to the squad, and he'll strengthen our side in both red and white ball competitions. We look forward to having him on board."
A 13-season Northamptonshire career
Zaib made his Northamptonshire debut in 2014 at the age of 16, having come through the Buckinghamshire pathway, and his first century came against Sussex in 2021, when he made 135 at Wantage Road. Since then he has compiled 12 first-class centuries, nine of them since the start of the 2025 season, and over the last two seasons he has scored 2,281 first-class runs at an average of 54, with 16 wickets at 33 apiece.
The headline season was 2025, when Zaib led the County Championship charts with 1,425 runs, six centuries and seven half-centuries at 64.77, including a career-best 196 not out against Kent. He then helped Northamptonshire win the 2026 Vitality Blast, beating Hampshire Hawks by 14 runs at Edgbaston.
His white-ball record explains Hampshire's emphasis on versatility. Zaib has scored more than 1,600 T20 Blast runs at a strike rate of 146.45, with eight half-centuries, and his left-arm spin has taken 21 wickets at eight runs per over. He played twice for Southern Brave in the 2026 Hundred, after spells with Welsh Fire and Northern Superchargers.
The move was not a surprise to county watchers. ESPNcricinfo reported on October 29 that Zaib had left Northamptonshire with a year left on his contract, after telling the club at the end of the season that he did not see his future there, and that talks aimed at changing his mind did not reverse his decision. Hampshire's announcement the following day confirmed the destination.
Zaib in Sudurpaschim Royals colours
For Nepal fans, the timing is what makes this story unusual: the announcement landed in the middle of the NPL season, while Zaib is already in Royals colours at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. Hampshire's own announcement notes that he is currently in action for the Royals, and nothing in it suggests he will leave Kirtipur early.
Zaib has played in both of the Royals' first two matches. In the opener against Lumbini Lions on October 26, he made 13 off 14 balls before Shadley van Schalkwyk dismissed him, as the Royals were bowled out for 87 and lost by seven wickets. Two days later against Pokhara Avengers, he was run out for 15, but the Royals recovered to chase 146 and win by six wickets, with captain Dipendra Singh Airee unbeaten on 51.
That leaves the Royals on two points from two matches, and Zaib remains part of a squad that has already shown both fragility and fightback ability in the first week. Their next fixture is Match 8 against Biratnagar Kings on Saturday, October 31, at 5:00 PM Nepal time, the second game of the weekend double-header at Kirtipur.
What the move means for Zaib and the Royals
For Zaib, the deal rewards two seasons of heavy run-scoring with a move to a county chasing an immediate Division One return after relegation in 2026. Hampshire have already signed Rishi Patel and Fynn Hudson-Prentice in the same rebuild, and Zaib's 2025 record as the country's leading Championship run-scorer fits that plan exactly.
For the Royals, it is a different kind of validation. A mid-tournament county signing shows the traffic running the other way: a player in the middle of an NPL campaign is simultaneously in demand for the next English season. It does not change the Royals' immediate task, reaching the playoffs, but it underlines why ICC-recognised status matters: NPL matches count as official T20 fixtures.
The practical question for supporters is simple, and the answer, for now, is reassuring. Zaib's Hampshire future begins with the county seasons ahead, while his present is Saturday's fixture against Biratnagar, where the Royals will look for a second win and a firmer place in the early points table. Fans can follow it through the NPL Season 3 schedule and live scores, with ticket details for the Kirtipur weekend, and the Royals vs Kings Match 8 preview sets out what Biratnagar, still hunting a first win, will bring to the evening game.
