The hardest part of defending a title is supposed to be the target on your back. Lumbini Lions have worn it for one match so far in Season 3, and they have already beaten the team most expected to take it from them.

Seven Straight Wins and a Title to Defend

The Lumbini Lions arrive at the second round of the Nepal Premier League as the team everyone is trying to catch. The defending champions finished last in the first season, then staged a roaring comeback to lift the trophy in the second, and their charge is now led by Rohit Paudel, the former national team captain who took Nepal to consecutive T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026. The Kathmandu Post's October 31 assessment puts it plainly: the Lions look poised to defend their title.

The foundation of that assessment is a winning streak. Lumbini's victory over Sudurpaschim Royals in the Season 3 opener was their seventh consecutive win in the tournament, covering three league wins late last season plus victories in the eliminator, Qualifier 2 and the final. Counting the opener, their league-stage streak alone now stands at four matches.

The opener mattered beyond the two points. The Royals have been the favourites to win the title in all three seasons and reached the final in both previous editions without lifting the trophy. Beating them first up, in a low-scoring game that replayed last season's final almost exactly, was the champions' way of saying the crown had not changed hands by accident. Lumbini bowled Sudurpaschim out for 87 and chased 88 for three in 9.5 overs, with Sher Malla taking 3 for 11 and D'Arcy Short blasting 40 from 18 balls.

A Squad Built on Balance, Not Star Names

Lumbini do not have a star-studded squad, and the Post does not pretend otherwise. Their overseas group is Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella, Bangladeshi all-rounder Shamim Hossain, Australian opener D'Arcy Short, American all-rounder Shadley van Schalkwyk and Namibian pacer Ruben Trumpelmann. Set against Janakpur Bolts with Moeen Ali and Jimmy Neesham, Kathmandu Gorkhas with David Warner, Karnali Yaks with David Miller, Pokhara Avengers with Shakib Al Hasan, Chitwan Rhinos with Ravi Bopara and Sikandar Raza, Sudurpaschim Royals with Sherfane Rutherford and Biratnagar Kings with Andre Russell, the Lions' list does not look the most intimidating in the league.

What Lumbini have instead, the Post argues, is a captain with the ability to use players who are not stars. Paudel was crucial to last season's title win, and his own words after that final explain the dressing room he has built. "It takes belief to be a champion. We had the belief that we would stage a comeback," he said after Lumbini recovered from one win and three losses in the league phase to lift the trophy.

Paudel's faith in his bowlers is just as specific. Praising Sher Malla, who has now won the NPL title twice in a row, he called the spinner his team's trump card. "Sher Malla is a top class player. Whenever we needed wickets, he delivered. We picked him at the auction knowing that wherever Sher Malla goes, trophies tend to follow," Paudel said. He was equally revealing about himself after winning the tournament's most valuable player award and a car for it: "Honestly, I never thought about the car, my mind was only on the trophy." A captain who talks like that is the reason a squad without superstars keeps winning.

The Streaks Behind Saturday's Fixtures

Saturday's double-header at Kirtipur is where the streaks collide. In the first match, Lumbini face Chitwan Rhinos at 12:30 PM, and the history is entirely one-way: Chitwan have never beaten Lumbini, losing by 33 runs in the first season and by six wickets in the second. Chitwan arrive in form of their own, though, on a current three-match winning streak, and they sit third on the points table after beating Biratnagar in their opener. Something has to give, and the team that gives it up will hand the other a genuine early advantage.

The second match, Sudurpaschim Royals against Biratnagar Kings at 5:00 PM, carries the league's longest shadow. Spanning the first two seasons, Sudurpaschim put together nine straight league-stage wins, a record the Post calls extremely difficult to surpass. Biratnagar were the side who handed the Royals their single loss in seven league fixtures last season, and the winless Kings now have the chance to announce their own title challenge by beating them again, as covered in our Match 8 preview.

Both games sit under a weather cloud that no streak can control. Rain has fallen in Kathmandu since late Thursday night and continued through Friday, and OnlineKhabar reported on October 30 that meteorologist Ujjwal Upadhyaya expected drizzle to continue until Saturday evening, with the chances of play low. The league has no reserve days, so a match abandoned without a result would see the two teams share one point each.

The Wider Second Round Picture

On Sunday, Janakpur Bolts meet Pokhara Avengers in the week's only single match. Janakpur arrive with one win and one loss, while Pokhara fell to Sudurpaschim in their opener, and the two sides have shared their two previous meetings with a win each. Pokhara carry the unwanted distinction of being the only side never to reach the playoffs, having lost 10 of their 15 matches so far, so Sunday is about stopping a familiar story from repeating.

Monday then brings Kathmandu Gorkhas against Chitwan Rhinos, a fixture with its own history working against the form book. Kathmandu were dismal in their opener, bowled out for 115 and beaten by eight wickets by Janakpur, while Chitwan enter on their three-match winning streak. Yet Chitwan have never beaten Kathmandu in their two previous league meetings. The points table after Match 6 already shows how tight the early race is: Karnali Yaks lead alone on four points from two wins, Lumbini sit second on net run rate at +4.599, and Chitwan are third at +0.400, with Biratnagar sixth and still winless.

What the Second Round Will Reveal

The honest reading of Lumbini's position is more complicated than the streak suggests. Seven straight wins is remarkable, but this season's squad has played exactly one match together, and a team built on balance has no single player to rescue a bad day. That is both its strength and its risk: if Short or Dickwella miss a game, or if Malla has an off day with the ball, the margin for error the opener suggested could disappear fast.

The second round will test whether the champions' method travels beyond the Royals. Chitwan's batting is a different problem from Sudurpaschim's, and Biratnagar's power has twice pushed games to the final over even in defeat. If Lumbini beat Chitwan on Saturday, the conversation changes from whether they can defend the title to whether anyone can stop them reaching the playoffs unbeaten. If they lose, the streak ends but the defence does not, and Paudel's record of recovering from a poor start becomes the more relevant precedent. Either way, the champions are the team the rest are chasing, and Saturday will show whether that chase is realistic or wishful.
