Four matches into Nepal Premier League Season 3, four teams share two points at the top of the table, and only net run rate separates defending champions Lumbini Lions from the chasing pack.

Four Teams on Two Points After Match 4

Four matches into Nepal Premier League Season 3, the points table is crowded at the top. Lumbini Lions sit first, but they share two points with Karnali Yaks, Chitwan Rhinos and Sudurpaschim Royals, and the order between the four is decided entirely by net run rate. With 24 league matches still to play, that early gap is far from decisive, but it already tells the story of the opening week: one huge win has put the defending champions clear, while the other three winners have had to work much harder for the same two points.

The table awards two points for a win, one for a tie or a no-result, and none for a defeat. The top four sides at the end of the 28-match league stage reach the playoffs, and when teams finish level on points, wins and then net run rate separate them. That is why a single afternoon at Kirtipur can already matter: Lumbini's rate was built in one chase, and it will take more than one ordinary win for anyone to pass it. All four matches so far have been played at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, where totals in the 140s and 150s have been defended but 87 was chased down inside ten overs.

Lumbini's Net Run Rate Advantage

Lumbini's advantage comes from the tournament opener on October 26, when they bowled Sudurpaschim Royals out for 87 and then chased 88 for the loss of three wickets in just 9.5 overs. Scoring at close to nine runs an over while conceding barely four produced a net run rate of +4.599, a figure no other side is close to matching. Captain Rohit Paudel's side therefore top the table despite having played only once, and they stay top until another team wins by a comparable margin or wins twice.

The chasing pack illustrates how different the routes to two points have been. Karnali Yaks sit second on +0.950 after defending 132 for nine against Janakpur Bolts, who were bowled out for 113 in a 19-run win on October 27. Chitwan Rhinos are third on +0.400 after defending 157 for three against Biratnagar Kings, who finished on 149 in an eight-run defeat the same day. Sudurpaschim Royals are fourth on -1.430, the only side to have played twice: they lost the opener heavily, then recovered on October 28 when captain Dipendra Singh Airee's unbeaten 51 off 36 balls carried them to 148 for four in 16.5 overs, chasing Pokhara Avengers' 145 for seven. Biratnagar Kings are the one side in the bottom half whose rate is still close to level, at -0.400, because their only defeat was a narrow one.

The Winless Half of the Table

Below the four teams on two points, three sides are still waiting for their first win. Biratnagar Kings lost their opener to Chitwan Rhinos by eight runs despite keeping the chase alive until late, and their net run rate of -0.400 leaves them best placed among the winless sides. Janakpur Bolts lost to Karnali Yaks by 19 runs after being bowled out for 113 chasing 133, which leaves them on -0.950. Pokhara Avengers, beaten by six wickets by Sudurpaschim Royals after posting 145 for seven, sit seventh on -1.542, the lowest rate in the league so far.

The eighth side, Kathmandu Gorkhas, have not played yet, so they sit bottom on fixtures played rather than on results. That changes on Thursday, when they open their campaign against Janakpur Bolts at 12:30 PM. The winner of that match joins the group on two points, while the loser stays winless and falls further behind a table that is already starting to stretch. For Janakpur, who have already lost once, a second defeat would leave them needing a run of wins to stay in the playoff race; for Kathmandu, a winning start would immediately put them in the top half. Fans following the day's action can track every ball on the live scores page.

Today's Matches and the October 31 Double-Header

Thursday's second match, Karnali Yaks against Biratnagar Kings at 5:00 PM, could change the top of the table outright. A Karnali win would take them to four points, clear of the field, and confirm the best start in the league. A Biratnagar win would instead leave five teams locked on two points and drag the leaders back into the pack. Either way, the table will look very different by Thursday night, with two more results added to a four-match sample.

There is then a rest day on Friday, October 30, before the next double-header on Saturday, October 31. Lumbini Lions face Chitwan Rhinos at 12:30 PM in a meeting of two teams already on two points, so the winner will move to four and take a real grip on a playoff place. Sudurpaschim Royals then meet Biratnagar Kings at 5:00 PM, a match that carries extra weight for both sides after Sudurpaschim's six-wicket win over Pokhara Avengers in Match 4. The full list of remaining fixtures is on the schedule page, and the table after those two matches will be the first one built on a full round of results rather than opening-week margins.
