Five matches into Nepal Premier League Season 3, five teams share two points at the top of the table, and Janakpur Bolts' first win has lifted them from the bottom half into the playoff places.

Five Teams on Two Points After Match 5

Five matches into Nepal Premier League Season 3, the points table has a logjam at the top. Lumbini Lions lead with two points, but they share that total with Karnali Yaks, Chitwan Rhinos, Janakpur Bolts and Sudurpaschim Royals, and the order between the five is decided entirely by net run rate. With the top four reaching the playoffs, the cut falls between Janakpur in fourth and Sudurpaschim in fifth.

The three winless sides sit below them. Biratnagar Kings are sixth on net run rate -0.400, Kathmandu Gorkhas are seventh on -0.942 after their opening defeat, and Pokhara Avengers are eighth on -1.542. Each of the three has played only once, so a single win would move any of them straight into the five-team pack on two points.

The table awards two points for a win and none for a loss, with ties between teams on equal points settled first by number of wins and then by net run rate. All five teams on two points have exactly one win each, which is why net run rate is doing all the sorting work this early in the season.

Janakpur's Climb Into the Top Four

Janakpur's rise is the one change Match 5 made to the table. The Bolts began the day winless and sixth after their 19-run defeat to Karnali Yaks in Match 3, and they ended it fourth. Moeen Ali led the eight-wicket win over Kathmandu with an unbeaten 58 off 51 balls, sharing an unbroken 79-run third-wicket stand with Saif Hassan, who finished on 40 not out off 39 balls in his first match for the franchise. Janakpur chased 116 in 17.2 overs with 16 balls to spare, after bowling Kathmandu out for 115 in 19.3 overs.

The bowling set the win up. Rahul Yadav took four wickets for 31 runs, Saif Hassan claimed two, and Moeen Ali, captain Harmeet Singh and Lalit Narayan Rajbanshi took one each. Bhim Sharki's 33 was Kathmandu's only score above 20. The full account is covered in our Janakpur vs Kathmandu Match 5 report.

The result also repaired Janakpur's net run rate, from -0.950 after the Karnali defeat to -0.041 now, comfortably ahead of Sudurpaschim's -1.430. With five teams level on points, Janakpur now hold the last playoff place on the tie-breaker, while Sudurpaschim, fourth after Match 4, drop to fifth without playing a ball.

Lumbini's Net Run Rate Cushion

Lumbini's lead, meanwhile, rests on a single extraordinary evening. The defending champions chased 88 against Sudurpaschim Royals in just 9.5 overs in the tournament opener, after bowling the Royals out for 87, and that seven-wicket win produced a net run rate of +4.599 that no other team is close to matching. Karnali, the next best, sit at +0.950 after their 19-run win over Janakpur, and Chitwan are at +0.400 after their eight-run win over Biratnagar, built on Dawid Malan's 70 and Kamal Singh Airee's four wickets for 26 runs.

The gap is so large that Lumbini would stay top even if Karnali or Chitwan win their next match, unless that win is itself a rout. But Lumbini have played only one match, fewer than Janakpur and Sudurpaschim, who have each played two, and their rate will be tested properly for the first time against Chitwan on October 31, a match that doubles as a direct contest for the top of the table.

Sudurpaschim's position shows the other side of the same arithmetic. The Royals bounced back by beating Pokhara Avengers by six wickets in Match 4, with captain Dipendra Singh Airee unbeaten on 51, yet their net run rate is still -1.430 because the 87 all out in the opener drags their tournament rate down. One heavy early defeat takes several good wins to wash out.

The Winless Half and the Matches Ahead

For the three winless teams, the table is a warning rather than a verdict. Biratnagar lost their opener to Chitwan by eight runs after a late collapse from a winning position, Kathmandu were bowled out for 115 in their first game of the season, and Pokhara posted 145 for seven against Sudurpaschim before losing by six wickets with 19 balls to spare. None has played a second game yet, so the bottom of the table is as provisional as the top.

The next chance to change it comes quickly. Karnali Yaks face Biratnagar Kings in Match 6 at Kirtipur on Thursday evening at 5:00 PM, a game that could give Karnali a second win or hand Biratnagar their first points. Friday, October 30, is a rest day, and Saturday, October 31, brings a double-header: Lumbini Lions against Chitwan Rhinos at 12:30 PM, then Sudurpaschim Royals against Biratnagar Kings at 5:00 PM. The full schedule and live scores will track each move.

That congestion is what makes the early table worth watching rather than just recording. After five matches, the difference between first and fifth is a tie-breaker, the difference between fourth and eighth is one win, and 23 league matches remain. The teams that treat net run rate as a second competition, finishing chases early and bowling sides out cheaply the way Lumbini and Janakpur have done, will hold the advantage when the mid-season logjam arrives.
