Janakpur Climb to Second on the NPL Points Table After Match 9

The points table after Match 9 has a new team in second place, and it is the side that held its nerve at the death on Sunday evening. Janakpur Bolts defended 147 for 7 against Pokhara Avengers at Kirtipur, holding the chase to 138 for 9, and the nine-run win takes the Bolts from fifth to second. They arrived at the ground on two points after a loss to Karnali and a win over Kathmandu; they left it level on points with the leaders.

The win was built on one long anchor and one late surge. Trit Raj Das top-scored with 61 off 55 balls, striking seven fours and two sixes, and held the innings together after Pokhara's bowlers had struck early. Abhisekh Tiwari finished 24 not out off just 10 balls, and dragged a total that had looked short of par up to 147. Moeen Ali made 21, while Shakib Al Hasan took three wickets for 15 runs in four overs for Pokhara.

The chase went down to the final overs, finishing nine runs short, which is why the table movement is only half the story. Captain Kushal Bhurtel top-scored for the Avengers with 35 off 24 balls, and Bipin Acharya made 20, but Moeen Ali's three wickets for 13 runs in four overs, including a maiden, strangled the middle of the chase. Janakpur's net run rate moved from -0.041 to +0.142, which is what lifts them above Lumbini and Chitwan rather than the two points alone.

Karnali Stay Top on Net Run Rate

Karnali Yaks did not play on Sunday, and they did not need to. Two wins from two matches keep them alone at the top on four points with a net run rate of +0.533, and Janakpur's win only tied them on points without passing them. The tie-breaker is the reason the Yaks stay first: their +0.533, built on beating Janakpur by 19 runs and Biratnagar by four wickets, beats Janakpur's +0.142.

Karnali's cushion was earned in the most dramatic game of the season so far. Chasing 187 against Biratnagar in Match 6, they recovered before captain Sompal Kami struck an unbeaten 62 off 32 balls to win with one ball to spare. That win, plus the 19-run win over Janakpur in Match 3, is why the Yaks can watch a rival climb to four points and still keep first place.

Their next test comes on Monday, when they face Kathmandu Gorkhas in Match 10 at 12:30 PM NST. A third straight win would take them to six points and clear daylight at the top; a first defeat would hand Kathmandu their first points and drag the Yaks back into a pack that is already tightening behind them.

Lumbini and Chitwan Hold the Middle

Behind the top two, the table has a two-team middle that was created without a ball being bowled on Saturday. Lumbini Lions are third and Chitwan Rhinos fourth, both on three points from two matches with one win and one no result each, separated only by net run rate. Lumbini's +4.599 is still the best in the league, built on bowling Sudurpaschim out for 87 and chasing the target in 9.5 overs in the season opener, while Chitwan's +0.400 reflects their tighter eight-run win over Biratnagar.

Both sides collected their third point on Saturday morning, when Match 7 between them was abandoned without a toss after heavy rain left the TU Ground waterlogged. The shared point kept both in the top four, and neither side lost ground while Janakpur climbed past them on Sunday.

Their paths split again from here. Chitwan return first, against Sudurpaschim Royals in Match 11 on Monday evening, where a win would take them to five points and outright first place. Lumbini wait until Tuesday, when they meet Pokhara Avengers in Match 13 at 5:00 PM NST, with a win taking them to five points as well.

Pokhara and Kathmandu Still Without a Point

The other side of Sunday's result is a bottom of the table that is starting to take shape. Pokhara Avengers are seventh, without a point from two matches, after losing their opener to Sudurpaschim by six wickets and now losing to Janakpur by nine runs. Their net run rate of -0.934 is the better of the two winless sides, which is why they sit above Kathmandu despite having played one match more.

Kathmandu Gorkhas are eighth, without a point from their only match, the eight-wicket defeat to Janakpur in Match 5, at a net run rate of -0.942. Between the bottom two and the top four sit Biratnagar Kings in fifth and Sudurpaschim Royals in sixth, both on two points from three matches, separated by net run rate: Biratnagar's +0.544 against Sudurpaschim's -2.413.

For a side that reached the final in both previous editions, sixth place after three games is a setback rather than a crisis for Sudurpaschim. The Royals still hold a win, over Pokhara, and their campaign still has league games to play after Monday. But the net run rate hole is real: at -2.413, if the race for fourth place finishes level on points, that number will decide who goes through and who goes home.

What the Monday Double-Header Changes

The next two fixtures can redraw this table completely, which is why the early standings deserve attention without being over-read. Match 10 on Monday afternoon is the biggest single game of the week so far. Kathmandu Gorkhas, still without a point after one match, face the leaders Karnali at 12:30 PM NST. A Karnali win opens a two-point gap at the top; a Kathmandu win gives the Gorkhas their first points, hands Karnali a first defeat, and throws the top of the table wide open on the same day that Match 11 is played.

That evening game, Sudurpaschim against Chitwan at 5:00 PM NST, carries the sharpest permutations of all. A Chitwan win takes the Rhinos to five points and outright first place, ahead of Karnali and Janakpur. A Sudurpaschim win takes the Royals to four points and level with the top two on points, though their net run rate would still need repair. The honest reading of this table is that it is both settled and unsettled at once: Karnali's four points are real, Janakpur's climb is real, and yet with league games left for every side and the top four reaching the playoffs, no position below first is safe. The full schedule shows how quickly that picture can change, and the Monday double-header is where it starts changing. The Match 9 result is the reason this table moved at all.
